Small Groups Purchasing Guide
Purchasing Tips for Small Group Health Insurance

  1. Survey employees about their needs before buying small business health insurance.  Before buying a group health insurance plan, ask employees what kind of health insurance coverage they want, and weigh the pros and cons with them.  CBC can assist you in developing on online survey to help facilitate this process if you have more than 10 employees.

  2. Some questions to ask employees before buying a small group health insurance plan: Are you happy with your current health insurance plan? Do you mind changing doctors? What if changing doctors resulted in a significant reduction in premium? How important are prescription costs? What's more important, regular medical maintenance or emergency coverage? By finding answers to these types of questions, a company is well on its way to buying a small group health plan that is targeted to employees' needs.

  3. Research the types of small business health insurance available. Fee-for-Service allows employees to choose their doctors, which pays for part of the cost. A Defined Network Plan benefits people who use doctors and hospitals within a network, e.g. HMO or PPO.  See types of coverage There are benefits to both types of small business health insurance plans. HMOs get a bad rap due to the physicians' referral process, but they can provide a large cost savings to customers. Small business health insurance with a Preferred Providers network (PPOs) costs more than an HMO but they broaden the scope of physicians to include hundreds or thousands more in a community that will accept a small group health insurance plan.

  4. Find the health insurance tax break before buying an employee medical insurance plan. Premiums for health insurance are fully deductible on company taxes.

  5. Shop around before buying corporate health insurance. With so many small group health insurance plans available, price shopping is a must. Once employees have been surveyed, your CBC agent will help you find the most cost-effective small group health insurance plan that is right for your company.

  6. Kick small business health insurance plan communications into high gear. A benefits plan that includes a top-notch employees' medical insurance plan is worth shouting about! Update employees with communications highlighting the benefits of a small business health insurance plan regularly. Most people don't have the time to read the fine print, and don't know about all of the benefits afforded them by their health insurance. So talk it up! And ensure that Human Resources representatives tell prospective hires about highlights of the small group health insurance plan too - it just might tip the scale in your favor.  CBC will help you develop these targeted communications.
